Starting the School Year Strong at LAVCA

Stories & Spotlights

As families across Louisiana gear up for a new school year with Louisiana Virtual Charter Academy (LAVCA), it’s the perfect time to start fresh—with new routines, new goals, and new opportunities to grow. Whether your child is just starting online learning or returning for another year, beginning the school year with strong habits can help make everything feel a little smoother and more manageable.

Here are five simple ways families can work together to help students have a successful school year from day one:

1. Create a Daily Routine That Works for Your Family

Online learning brings flexibility, but kids still thrive with structure. Try setting up a daily schedule that includes a consistent wake-up time, regular learning blocks, breaks to recharge, and a set time to wrap up the school day.

Younger students may need more guidance sticking to the schedule, while older students might appreciate having input as they plan their day. A predictable routine helps students of all ages feel calm, confident, and ready to learn.

2. Check In Often Using LAVCA’s Digital Tools

Staying in the loop is easier when it becomes part of your daily rhythm. Make a habit of checking the K12 app, student dashboard, and teacher announcements every morning and afternoon—together, if your student is younger.

These tools help families know what’s coming up, what assignments are due, and where to go for help. A quick check-in each day can make a big difference in staying organized and avoiding last-minute stress.

3. Make Wellness a Family Priority

Kids learn best when they feel their best—physically and emotionally. As you build your school-year routines, be sure to include time for movement, meals, and rest.

Plan brain breaks between lessons, enjoy screen-free lunches together, and aim for regular bedtimes to support good sleep. Even small things, like stretching before class or taking a walk after school, can help students stay energized and focused.

4. Get Involved and Stay Connected

At LAVCA, your family is part of a supportive school community. Students can join virtual clubs, activities, and career-readiness programs that help them build friendships and explore interests.

Families can also connect through online events, discussion forums, and local meetups. If you have questions or need support, reach out to your child’s teacher or learning coach. There’s always someone here to help.

5. Encourage Effort and Celebrate the Small Wins

Online learning can help students grow in confidence, independence, and responsibility—but encouragement is key. Celebrate more than just grades. Cheer for progress, effort, and curiosity.

Try asking your child each week:

  • “What’s something you learned that you’re excited about?”
  • “What’s something you’d like to get better at?”

These simple conversations can help build reflection, resilience, and pride in learning.

A Strong Start at LAVCA

At LAVCA, every student has the potential to shine and every family plays a part in helping make that happen. With the right routines, strong support, and a positive outlook, your child can start the year with confidence and keep growing every step of the way.

Here’s to a year of learning, connection, and discovery. We’re so glad to have your family as part of our school community!
